Supporting on the line possibilities
This is what would happen when I move to support at different angles as a full back (Left back in this case) on the line with an opposition winger marking me.
Here is the situation: I am on the sideline with the winger blocking any option of me advancing forward or letting my center back who has the ball, pass to me. I was staying in the same place and not receiving the ball for the most of the first half of my game.
1. Staying put: This is what I was doing yesterday. I was staying in that position near the line, and letting my center back feed the balls to the winger and CAM. I felt like I was useless in this situation, but I was unconsciously keeping the winger with me and letting my CB have more space for a pass up the field.
2. Dropping down: By dropping down I mean only till my CB's line. Here one advantage is that he can play me and I can they play the keeper. If I drop down there's a possibility that the winger also follows me a bit, this leaves more space behind that winger that my CB can use to go forward.
3. Going forward 1.2: Here I'm going forward along the line, this is risky because if the ball is lost there's only three men behind to defend. So the pass to the CAM has to be perfect, then he can play it out to me on the line and I can then put it into space ahead for my winger or striker.
4. Going forward 2.2: This one is going up but coming inside a little, into the space between the oppositions winger and CAM. Here again the risk of losing the ball and being down to three men at the back is there. So the pass has to be perfect to me. In this case my CAM has to go further up and I have to turn and play the ball forward. I don't think my coach would approve of this though, because he'd say it's too risky to play it through the oppositions winger and CAM. Another threat is that the opposition winger might come back and inside to block the passing option.
That's it
