 The best way to make someone understand why playing the ball quicker is, Nothing on the pitch is faster than a moving ball. You think you can outrun a properly weighted through ball? well you cant really until it slows down. 

Why is playing faster better? Playing faster gives the opponents less time to react to what's happened. Therefore giving less time for them to close you down and more time for you to execute your plan. as mentioned above the ball travels faster than you ever could. Use the speed of the ball by trying to move the ball more than you move yourself. 

Although there may be many instances during the game where taking your time by taking those extra touches would come handy. For situations like holding the through ball to give your teammate time to make the run. Also based on the score line and time on the clock, you should slow the play by taking more touches.
